GEICO Car Insurance Review 2026

Review GEICO auto coverage, discounts, DriveEasy and mechanical breakdown insurance, with New York requirements, complaint data and 2026 ratings.
GEICO Car insurance

A low car-insurance quote is useful only if it buys the coverage you expect. GEICO offers online tools, local agents and optional mechanical-breakdown protection, but a familiar brand and a long discount list do not establish who will charge you the least.

For New York drivers, the comparison should start with no-fault benefits, uninsured-motorist protection and enough liability coverage for a serious crash. This review examines GEICO's current terms, its April 2026 financial rating and New York complaint data.

How much does GEICO car insurance cost?

There is no single price that describes a GEICO policy. The vehicle, drivers, garaging address, mileage, coverage limits, deductibles and other permitted rating factors all affect the quote. A ticket or accident can affect pricing; there is no general promise that GEICO will overlook either.

PropertyNest has not collected a new, standardized GEICO quote sample for this review. The table below supplies market context from the NAIC instead. Its combined premium adds average liability, collision and comprehensive premiums. It is historical industry data, not an insurer quote or a matched comparison of identical drivers.

Financial strength and New York complaints

In April 2026, AM Best affirmed A++ (Superior) financial strength ratings for the listed GEICO group insurers, with stable outlooks. That evaluates financial strength, not the speed or outcome of an individual claim.

New York's complaint report provides a different measure. It separates legal insurance companies rather than assigning one score to the brand. The following figures cover complaints closed in 2024, using average 2023–2024 premiums as the denominator. Lower ratios mean fewer upheld complaints per $1 million of premiums in that dataset; they are not percentages of customers who complained.

New York coverage: start with the required protection

Liability coverage pays for covered harm you cause to other people or property. It is not the same as no-fault personal injury protection, which pays eligible injury-related expenses regardless of fault.

New York also requires uninsured-motorist bodily-injury protection. It is incorrect to treat uninsured-motorist coverage as universally optional. Supplementary uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, or SUM, expands protection; New York generally includes it at the bodily-injury liability limit on a new policy unless you reject it or choose a lower amount through the required waiver.

The table summarizes minimum requirements. Minimums are a legal floor, not a recommendation for every household. A $10,000 property-damage limit can be exhausted by an expensive repair.

New York minimum auto insurance protection
CoverageMinimum amountWhat the amount applies to
Bodily injury liability, nonfatal$25,000 / $50,000One person / two or more people per accident
Liability for death$50,000 / $100,000One person / two or more people per accident
Property damage liability$10,000Per accident, damage to others
No-fault personal injury protection$50,000Basic economic loss per eligible person
Uninsured-motorist bodily injury$25,000 / $50,000One person / two or more people; basic NY protection

Collision and comprehensive protect your vehicle

GEICO's auto coverage guide distinguishes collision damage from non-collision losses such as theft, fire and weather damage. These protections are generally optional under state law, though a lender or lessor may require them. Check each deductible separately.

“Full coverage” is shorthand, not a policy that covers every loss. Routine maintenance, ordinary wear, business use and belongings inside the car may require different protection or be excluded.

Mechanical breakdown insurance: check eligibility early

GEICO's optional mechanical breakdown insurance, or MBI, covers eligible mechanical repairs that are not covered by the manufacturer's warranty. It does not pay for routine maintenance or ordinary wear. Eligibility can close while the vehicle is still relatively new.

Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance

Rental reimbursement helps with a rental vehicle after a covered claim, subject to daily and total limits. GEICO illustrates $25 a day and $750 per claim; those are example limits, not every customer's policy. A $45 daily rental would leave a $20 daily shortfall under that example, before other excluded costs. Confirm actual limits before booking.

Emergency roadside service is a separate optional coverage. Review towing and service limits and compare it with any roadside benefit you already have.

Claim Forgiveness has eligibility rules

GEICO Claim Forgiveness can waive the surcharge for the first qualifying loss by an eligible driver. The benefit applies once per policy, not separately to every driver. It can be earned or purchased where available and is not offered in California, Connecticut or Massachusetts. Free eligibility generally requires at least five accident-free years and may exclude drivers under 21. It does not freeze the entire renewal premium against unrelated changes.

Gap coverage and rideshare work

GEICO says it does not offer gap insurance. If you owe more than the car is worth, compare another source of loan-balance protection and read its exclusions.

For Uber, Lyft or delivery work, disclose the use before buying. GEICO's vehicle-use guidance says special coverage is needed and that a personal-policy amendment may be available in some states. It does not establish a universally available New York rideshare endorsement or a lower deductible than the platform's insurance.

DriveEasy: savings depend on the driving score

DriveEasy uses phone data to evaluate driving behavior. GEICO says riskier drivers may receive a higher rate, depending on the state. Review the program offered with your quote before enrolling; safe driving does not guarantee that the total renewal bill will fall.

The current program page lists availability in 47 states and Washington, D.C., excluding California, Hawaii and Vermont. New York has an additional rule: scores older than three years cannot be used, and required re-monitoring must occur within the stated 36-month period. Failing to complete it can remove an applicable telematics discount.

GEICO discounts to compare

These are advertised opportunities, not guaranteed reductions to the entire bill. Eligibility and the coverages receiving a discount vary by state. Do not add maximum percentages together.

New York defensive-driving savings

A qualifying DMV-approved course can provide a minimum 10% reduction in the base rate of liability and collision premiums for three years. The reduction is not 10% off every charge on the policy. Confirm the eligible driver, course and certificate-submission requirements.

Claims and customer service

You can report and track claims through GEICO's claims center and mobile app. Its current contact page lists 800-207-7847 for sales and service and 800-424-3426 for emergency roadside service.

Do not plan around a guaranteed 48-hour settlement. GEICO's claims-timing explanation says the facts, investigation and required documentation affect the process. Payment timing also depends on the delivery method and whether a lender is involved.

After a crash, preserve photographs, contact details and receipts, and keep the claim number. Ask the adjuster which expenses are authorized and whether rental benefits end before repairs or a replacement purchase are complete.

GEICO versus other car insurers

Progressive

The useful difference is coverage, not an unsupported declaration that one company is cheapest for every driver with a ticket or DUI. Progressive offers loan/lease payoff coverage where available. It requires comprehensive and collision and generally pays up to 25% of the vehicle's value toward the qualifying loan gap, with state variations. Progressive explicitly distinguishes this product from gap insurance.

GEICO's MBI answers a different problem: eligible mechanical failure. Compare the protection you need, then obtain quotes with identical liability limits and physical-damage deductibles. DriveEasy and Progressive's Snapshot have their own state-specific rules; neither should be assumed to guarantee savings.

State Farm

State Farm offers an agent-based alternative and Drive Safe & Save. Its advertised savings can reach 30%, with New York capped at 30%, but the actual discount depends on eligibility and the program. A discount is not a promise that the total premium cannot rise.

State Farm also offers classic and collector car insurance; it is incorrect to say this option is absent. Product versions and eligibility vary by state, so a collector should ask about the vehicle's usage, storage and agreed value rather than compare ordinary commuter policies.

PropertyNest's assessment

GEICO is worth quoting if you value digital policy management, qualify for useful discounts or own a vehicle eligible for MBI. Its financial strength is a positive signal. Drivers needing loan-gap protection or specialized commercial use should compare those needs explicitly before choosing it.

Ask for the full policy-term premium, installment fees, deductible amounts and endorsements. Compare the same drivers, mileage and coverage across insurers. A larger advertised discount can still leave a larger bill.
