Neponsit Apartments for Rent
About Neponsit Neighborhood

Neponsit. "The place between waters" in the tongue of the area's one-time Native American inhabitants. The neighborhood literally sits between Jamaica Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and Jacob Riis Park. The community was birthed in 1910 when the Neponsit Realty Company purchased land to build an exclusive community that forbade inexpensive homes. The area stretches from Beach 142nd Street to Beach 149th Street. The four by eight block community forbids parking and is zoned strictly for residential use, with nearby neighborhoods providing all the necessary services, amenities, and entertainment. The result is a beach getaway fit for kings since it takes a royal salary to afford to live there (or knowing someone with a parking connection). Nonetheless, the area is partly cared for by modest means. The Neponsit Property Owners Association plants and tends to landscaping in the area. The civic group is supported by voluntary annual dues ranging between $50 and $75. The commute to the city is long, but the trade-off for families is being able to send children to schools populated with high achievers. A fair trade to many!
