Stuyvesant Town-Cooper Village (also known as Stuy Town) is a large, private residential development located on the east side of Manhattan. It is made up of two parts: Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. Its boundaries are 14th Street and 23 Streets and First Avenue to Avenue C. There is a total of 11,250 apartments in 110 buildings covering approximately 80 acres of land. The complex was originally developed in the 1940s by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company as a post-war housing development for returning World War II veterans. Notable residents have included political consultant David Axelrod and mystery writer Mary Higgins Clark.
