About East Harlem Neighborhood

Neighborhood Map image

Also known as Spanish Harlem or “El Barrio,” East Harlem is a culturally and historically rich neighborhood located in Upper Manhattan. It is a predominately Latino community comprised of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Dominicans, and Mexicans. For many people still looking to find affordable housing in Manhattan, this is one of the very few areas offering reasonable costs. Higher rents in other Manhattan neighborhoods is forcing gentrification of the area at a rapid rate. Behind Brownsville, Brooklyn East Harlem offers the highest concentration of public housing in the country. There is also a sizable amount of older tenement and low-rise residential buildings. Notable residents have included rapper Tupac Shakur and singer Marc Anthony.
