Gerritsen Beach is a small boating-and-fishing peninsula located between Sheepshead Bay and Marine Park. Almost all homes experience damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The neighborhood is divided from west to east by the Gotham Avenue Canal. This secluded enclave consists of mostly single-family homes. The co-ops and condos are located in the northernmost edge of the community. The residents are characterized as ethnic and blue-collar. Gerritsen Avenue is the main commercial strip and The Kings Plaza Mall is nearby for shopping. The Gerritsen Ballfields are located on the east side of the strip and recreational fishing is a very popular activity among residents.
