About Bergen Beach Neighborhood

Bergen Beach is a cozy, residential area located in the southeastern portion of Brooklyn. It is located on a peninsula with Paerdegat Basin to the north and Jamaica Bay and the Belt Parkway to the east. Much of Bergen Beach was not developed until the 1960s due to the bogginess of the land in the area. It was originally an island in Jamaica Bay and was joined to the mainland with landfill in the early 1900s. The neighborhood is miles away from the nearest subway and is only accessible by car or bus. There are still areas of undeveloped land sandwiching the Belt Parkway. McGuire Fields is a large sports-friendly park with ball fields, a beach volleyball court, a roller-hockey rink and tennis courts.
